I just read an article in the L.A. Times that says only 4,000 people or less than 0.1% of the population have taken the free disaster preparedness class offered by the fire department. I would imagine that the classes would be very helpful. Also, even if your don't live in Los Angeles, there are probably some disaster preparedness classes in your area.
