A Bold New Attitude for Career Success: My Change Nation interview with Nicole Williams
If you're looking for work, be on the lookout for some of the most common job-hunting mistakes. According to career expert, Nicole Williams, author of Wildly Sophisticated: A Bold New Attitude for Career Success, these include being unprepared and not being broad-minded enough.
"There's this thing in the world of work; it's called 'tribalism,'" says Williams. If "you look and sound like me and my company… I then make the connection that you are the right fit." Instead of applying to hundreds of jobs, as many people tend to do, pick 10 companies and know them inside and out. Doing that extra bit of research will get you noticed.
The other mistake people make is not being broad-minded in terms of where the opportunity is. "I don't care if you're in the grocery store or if you are taking the subway, there are opportunities everywhere," says Williams, who advises staying away from typical job boards and spending more time looking in your own backyard.
