Keep Your Head in the Workout Game
Go to the gym at any time of the day and you will see exercisers loaded with distractions of all sorts—MP3 players, flat-screen televisions pinned to treadmills and heart rate monitors, just to name a few. You might think these gadgets provide easy distraction from the monotony of being on the elliptical machine for the millionth time, but it might not be such a good idea.
Instead, try to focus on the work at hand and keep these tips in mind to get in shape:
1. Take note of what your body has to say during warm-up. Any aches or injuries? How’s your energy level? What type of workout is your body craving today? Make sure you are also aware of the information your brain is feeding your body. If you are thinking negative thoughts, like “I’m so tired!” then this is the time to start replacing them with positive inner dialogue.
2. Try to keep the positive energy flowing throughout your workout. The more you stay focused on your workout, the more efficient you will be in executing exercises. The more focused your intention is, the more results you will see.
3. Use your cool-down as time to take inventory. Save a few minutes post-workout to check in with your body: How did you do today? What did your mental track sound like? Was it jumbled or clear? If negative thoughts forced their way in, what did you do with them? This is also a good time to take note of things you would keep or change about your workout plan the next time you exercise.
