You're turning Violet, Violet

If you’re huffing and puffing and turning purple while you’re on the treadmill every morning, you’re probably doing something wrong. According to Jay Blahnik, a fitness expert for MSNBC.com who was named one of the top five fitness instructors in the world by Shape Magazine, says that breathing properly during exercise is important for getting the right results for your effort.

His tips for breathing properly include:

  • Avoid shallow breath during cardio activity.
  • When strength training, you should inhale during the easy part, exhale during the hard part.
  • For mind/body exercises, you should focus on deep breathing using your diaphragm.
