If you’re looking to improve your relationship with your spouse, a good argument may be your best bet. A recently published study in the Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine by the University of Michigan shows that squabbling—constructively, of course—can benefit a couple.
CNN reports that the study tracked couples over a 17 year period and found that those who kept their anger bottled up did not live as long as those who periodically hashed it out with their significant other. Researchers say you should articulate your feelings of anger, even if you can’t talk about the issue right away. Women are particularly at risk—those who do not speak up are four times more likely die earlier from cardiovascular disease or cancer.
Find a way to let your spouse know directly what’s bothering you, even if it’s something small like leaving socks on the floor or forgetting to take out the trash. You’ll feel better, and your communication will improve—possibly leading to improvement in other areas of your relationship as well. [CNN]
I do not think this works with every couple, especially if the person is a narcissist.I have had too many arguments with my husband, he has a very short fuse, and it does not help to come from a place of love. Some men can become verbally or phycologically abusive. open to suggestions.
