A Shave and BP Check

Imagine going to the barbershop and getting your blood pressure checked after you get a trim. That’s what is happening at Baltimore's Park Heights Barbershop, where the barbers are at the forefront of health care for black Americans.

This is part of the Hair, Heart and Health program, started by a cardiologist at the University of Maryland School of Medicine as a way to get black men to pay attention to their health. Statistically, heart disease is the No. 1 killer of black men, and it starts with high blood pressure. According to CBS, black men are twice as likely as white men to have undiagnosed and untreated high blood pressure.

These barbers are not only checking their customers blood pressure, but giving them tips on living healthier and reminders to visit their doctor and take their medications. The program is considered to be a major step in helping black men pay better attention to their health. [CBS News]
