Alcohol Link to Cancer
If you have one or two alcoholic beverages on a daily basis, listen up. A major study conducted by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) concluded that regular booze consumption increases the chances for postmenopausal women to develop breast cancer. The NCI is leaning towards a theory that alcohol disturbs the metabolism of estrogen, therefore raising the risk of cancer.
By collecting information from 184,000 women, the study found that women were 32% more likely to develop a hormone-sensitive tumor if they had one or two drinks a day. This increased to a 51% risk for women who drank three or more glasses of booze. And it didn’t matter what kind of alcohol was consumed—the results were the same, according to Jasmine Lew, the study’s lead investigator.
Lew also said it’s too early to make health recommendations to masses of women. But if you think your lifestyle might be putting you in danger of breast cancer, control your intake of alcohol, talk to your doctor and take one more step toward a healthier life. [Reuters]
