Are Nutrition Labels Accurate?
Did you know that the Food and Drug Administration allows nutrition labels to have a margin of error of up to 20% before taking action? Even if you’re doing everything you can to live healthier, the nutritional powers that be may be working against you.
ABC’s “Good Morning America” hired experts to test whether the information on a food label was true. Though three labels were a bit off on the healthier side (they had less fat than advertised), 12 products contained higher levels of unhealthy nutrients, and some were way over the 20% guideline. This might remind you of the reports that any food can label itself as “zero trans fat” as long as it has less than half a gram in a serving. Pair that with the fact that Americans rarely eat just one serving.
The food manufactures responded saying that the FDA tests many samples from many different lots of food and that’s a more accurate measurement. But does it matter if the ABC report looks at what people are actually eating? [ABC News]
