Attack of the Killer Tomatoes Continues!

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes Continues!

Salmonella-tainted tomatoes are on the attack, and it's getting worse! The tained fruit has left several grocery stores and fast food restaurants with no choice but to pull the it from their restaurants and shelves after a bizarre salmonella outbreak that has now spread to at least 17 states.

Yesterday, McDonald's, Subway, Burger King and Chipotle all announced their plans to pull tomatoes from their restaurants. In addition, grocery stores, including Safeway, Publix, Kroger and Giant are stopping the sale of tomatoes. The decisions came after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said there have been 145 reported cases of salmonellosis across the country, sending 23 people to the hospital and possibly one death linked to the outbreak.

The FDA expanded their warning this weekend, warning all consumers to avoid certain types of raw, red tomatoes. The infected tomatoes include raw red Roma, red plum and red round tomatoes. The warning was initially only issued to New Mexico and Texas. States that have reported cases of salmonella include Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

But not all tomatoes have been reported hazardous to health. Cherry and grape tomatoes, and tomatoes sold with the vine still attached were not affected in the contamination. FDA investigators have yet to determine the source of the outbreak, but officials have issued a statement assuring consumers that they are working to uncover the cause.

Salmonellosis can cause fever, diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain in healthy adults. But the effects can be fatal in children and the elderly, or people with weak immune systems. The FDA has advised people who experience such symptoms after eating the contaminated tomatoes to contact a health care professional immediately.

Are you growing more frusted with these stories that more and more food is tainted with deadly diseases? Are you worried that the FDA is not equipped to monitor the safety of our food supply? [ABC News]
