Eat Like a Caveman

Eat Like a Caveman

There’s the Phil Hartman Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer bit that goes, “Ladies and gentleman of the jury, I’m just a caveman.” And then there are those Geico cavemen commercials. Cavemen aren't exactly our brightest ancestors, but they aren’t only good for laughs! It turns out that we could learn a little from something called “The Caveman Diet.” Seriously!

Clearly our crazy fad diets, processed “health” food and obesity epidemic are all pointing to one fact: we’re doing something wrong! As advanced as our society is, we don’t know how to eat healthily anymore! Or if we know how to live healthier, we choose not to because there are so many other tantalizing choices that win over when debating in the grocery aisle.

Ray Mears is a proponent of “The Caveman Diet,” spending weeks out in the wild and subsisting on what he can find. He’s convinced such a “primitive” lifestyle would prevent more illnesses related to our bad eating habits. He says, “We still have a Stone Age body. We have modern minds, but our brains and bodies still require the same food.” What do you think? Are you ready to go back to a hunting-and-gathering lifestyle, or at the very least, bring it into your household?!? [The Times UK]

So what exactly is the "caveman diet?" If it means trying to eat mostly fresh fruits, vegetables, meat and fish that sounds pretty similar to what many other experts are recommending. Cavemen didn't have preservatives or much in the way of carbs. Of course, we need some carbs, they just shouldn't be the main focus of all our meals.

So, are we supposed to go out, club a squirrel and bring it home to roast on a spit?
