You’ve heard it all before: To live healthier, you should eat your fruits and vegetables, get your fiber, yadda, yadda, yadda.

But here’s some news you may have not yet seen—nutrition experts say that while all fruits and vegetables will keep your body healthy, the particularly bright and bold ones will help you stay young. Which color is the best for your bod? Go for the red.

* Red cabbage. It has a deep red coloring that contains 36 plant chemicals, and researchers say those babies may be helpful in protecting against cancer, increasing brain function and supporting heart health. Cut some cabbage into a fresh salad for a new flavor.

* Beet juice. This root veggie has a chemical that your body may change into a compound that is known for developing blood vessels and lowering blood pressure, according to British scientists. Now, you may not want to drink straight beet juice; if you would rather not taste the red elixir, nutritionists say you can mix it into a smoothie.

*Tomatoes. You may have already heard of this fruit’s health benefits. Tomatoes are known for lycopene and beta-carotene, antioxidants that are famous for lowering cholesterol and keeping your heart young. We're sure you can think of tons of ways to eat tomatoes...whether sliced on its own, or on your turkey or veggie burger.

I just tried a new way to make beets that a friend told me about. Take fresh whole beets, wash them, wrap them up in foil, like baked potatoes and bake them in the oven or toaster oven for about 45 minutes. Then you can slice them up and eat them. They're so yummy and sweet. She said to drizzle a little olive oil on them, which I didn't do, but will do next time.
