It's National Doughnut Day

It's National Doughnut Day

Christmas, Hanukkah and Easter are just grand, but the verdict is still out about whether or not today’s holiday—National Doughnut Day—can beat them all out as this country’s favorite way to celebrate. Still, like any holiday, this one has the potential to derail the healthiest of lifestyles.

There may be a way to eat your doughnut and keep your health intact, too. While no doughnut is ever going to be a food group staple, it is OK to indulge now and then, especially, on a semi diet-friendly version. Check out these options, then run out there and get your fix—it’s time to part-taay it up, doughnut-style!

*Krispy Kreme—This one made the list first because they are offering free doughnuts today! Scoop up the Whole Wheat Glazed Doughnut (180 calories, 11 g fat and `0 g sugars). Want to share? Try the Original Glazed Doughnut Holes—for 5 pieces you are eating 200 calories, 11 g fat and 15 g sugars.

*Dunkin’ Donuts—Munch on a regular Glazed Donut (180 calories, 8 g fat and 12 g sugars) and listen to your tummy’s cry out in satisfaction. You can also check out the French Cruller (150 calories , 8g fat and 8 g sugar)—get one to go and then get back to work!

*Donut Connection—This company’s Glazed Donut Ring is not quite as number-pleasing as the first two, but with 240 calories, 13 g fat and 11 g sugar, it’s still not the worst choice out there.

Not planning on spending your holiday at any of these national chains? Just keep in mind what the list seems to be emphasizing about our favorite fried cakes: The lighter the batter the better, and go with as little toppings as possible.

Enjoy! [MSN]
