Prenatal Vitamins for Dad

If you or your spouse are trying for a baby, you both may want to start taking some prenatal vitamins. A new study from researchers in California suggests that it might also be wise for men to consider prenatal vitamins as well.

Healthy men were asked about their diets to discern how much folate, zinc and antioxidants such as vitamin C they ingested regularly. Apparently, men who consume more folate have a reduced risk of aneuploidy, a condition that affects the sperm. It is thought that aneuploidy may be a factor in miscarriages and disorders such as Down’s Syndrome. Folate is also prescribed to women who are trying to conceive in order to reduce the risk birth defects.

If you’re already pregnant, it can’t hurt to encourage your partner to take more vitamins anyway to live healthier! If you want to conceive again in the future, or are trying to get pregnant now, it can’t hurt for both of you to get plenty of folate.  [Reuters]
