Waist-Friendly Chips

Waist-Friendly Chips

In the name of living healthier, most people tend to steer clear of snacky foods, like cookies, ice cream and chips. But every successful dieter also knows that they have to allow a bit of room for small indulgences. When it comes to an old-time favorite like tortilla chips and salsa, health experts say there is a better chip to choose in order to stay healthy.

Food scientists have discovered that blue corn tortilla chips have 20% more protein and 9% less starch. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, these babies also have a more preferable glycemic index than their white corn counterparts.

And another bonus: Blue corn tortilla chips have antioxidant-like benefits due to its color that is caused by the same properties found in red wine. These chips are also shown to be a better choice for diabetics who may be trying to avoid metabolic syndrome which causes elevated blood pressure and increased risk of coronary heart disease, according to the American Heart Association.

But health experts say white corn isn’t a terrible option either; these friends of blue corn tortilla chips are also nutritious and a better option to not-so-diet-friendly potato chips.

We want to know: Anyone feel funny about eating blue chips? We're always thrown for a loop when we see those Terra Blue Potato Chips around, but they are darn tasty! [Miami Herald]
