House Slams Cigarettes

House Slams Cigarettes

It could be the kiss of death for smoking and tobacco companies if a new bill regulating the tobacco industry passes in the Senate. If it passes, the FDA will have the power to regulate tobacco products. The bill proposes:

* Tobacco companies disclose their products’ contents.
* The FDA removes or reduces harmful ingredients.
* A ban of marketing phrases such as “light,” “mild” and “low-tar.”
* Warning labels will cover 30% of a cigarette pack.

According to an American Cancer Society representative, the bill has the power to save more lives than any other piece of health legislation passed in the last 50 years.

The Senate, who approved such a measure back in 1996, is expected to pass the bill as well. Back then, the Supreme Court  ruled that the FDA did not have the right to regulate tobacco, but oh, how the times have changed.

If this bill passes, do you think it will help people quit smoking? Or could it send the opposite message that cigarettes are less harmful now that they’re regulated? [USA Today]

People will smoke because they want to. We all know smoking is bad for us, but there are millions who still do it. May be the bill will help people quit smoking, but we'll have to wait and see.
