The Smoking Gene
More news from genetic researchers today: a genetic variation has been identified by three different research teams that they claim can make you more likely to be addicted to tobacco. This doesn’t mean that a “cure” for smoking is around the corner, as we have said in the past about other genetic discoveries.
The interesting thing is that people who inherit this genetic variation are nearly 80% more likely to develop lung cancer than those who don’t have it and smoke.
Though your addiction may be beyond your control and literally in your genes, that still doesn’t mean you can’t quit smoking right now. Treatments that use this research may be years down the line, so check out the new anti-smoking site Becomeanex.com. [MSNBC]
