Answer:

A few questions - upper or lower? any issues (slipped disks, pinching, etc.)

Make sure you understand what is wrong with your back before jumping into any exercise.

If a doctor gives you the go ahead you need to focus on two muscle groups - core & back.

Yoga/Pilates "Cobra" - great for the lower back
Plank (front and side) - great for front/side abs/core.

Also don't be afraid to go through these exercises a couple of times each day.

Pilates works for me. There are also different instructors, which also makes a differencein the level of intensity.

I've been told yoga works well for your back. Three sessions in, I can say it is a bit challenging, but you can feel it working!
