Social Yoga Centers

Social Yoga Centers

Terry McBride didn’t start doing yoga because of spiritual, health, or any other deeper reason, but merely to meet women. Nowadays, he is beginning his own chain of yoga studios in Canada called Yyoga, which has a smarter business model in tune with the busy lives of its patrons, and their, well, questionable reasons for trying out the classes, including getting a nicer butt or meeting people.

McBride reiterates that yoga and meditation have no firm rules or goals; it is up to the individual as to what he or she gets out of it, but he emphasizes that having a happy mind should be the ultimate outcome. He also likens modern-day yoga studios to community centers, a place to convene, as opposed to an uptight, pretentious work-out setting.

Just as yoga can be approached from a multitude of directions, it can affect all aspects of your life in a positive way. McBride says, “It’s not an isolated practice. It is a cultivating practice that helps everything else that you might do in your life.”

Would this kind of “social” yoga center attract you or make you run for the hills? [Yyoga.ca]

I think it's great idea! Working out is a lonely enough experience, and with as many people together in a yoga class as there is, it would naturally make sense for people to be able to build friendships, network, and ultimately find someone to hook up with. I would like to see programs like this in the U.S. very soon.
