One Thousand Thoughts

“I can’t possibly meditate—I have 1,000 thoughts racing through my mind!”

Sound familiar? Many people struggle through meditation because it is such a challenge to have no thoughts, fewer thoughts or only positive thoughts. We are thinking creatures, but this doesn't mean a clear head is unattainable. Meditation and attention can go hand in hand!

Instead of focusing on controlling your thoughts, try releasing them instead via some sort of activity. To help clear your mind before you meditate, take five minutes and put on your favorite dance music and get your groove on! Dance wildly and ecstatically! Use your body to express all of your frustrations and delight, anger and joy. Jump, shake and even make sounds. Really allow yourself to relax and let go through your movements. For the last minute, push your dancing to the extreme. Then, stop. Gradually catch your breath and bring your body to stillness on the cushion. Your mind should be clear and your body alive.

If you still find your mind wandering, try to accept your thoughts rather than banish them. Let them come and go! If you notice a challenging emotion while meditating or are fearing the expectation of having no thoughts, embrace what you are experiencing and then return to the practice. A good way to refocus is to inhale for a slow count of three, pause for a count of one, then exhale for three.
